"[Our philosopher] asserted that he knew the whole secret...[H]e surveyed the two celestial strangers from top to toe, and mantained to their faces that their persons, their worlds, their suns and their stars, were created solely for the use of man. At this assertion our two travelers let themselves fall against each other, seized with a fit of...inextinguishable laughter"
-- Voltaire (1752)
Hello all. My name is Lu. This is a science blog, on a microscopic and astronomical scale (and a combination of both--extraterrestrials!). I'm biology student, pretty much in love with the universe.

Sun yellow, purple and red | kokehtz
The sun emits light full range. Until recently, only professionals telescopes could observe the Sun in several wavelengths.Today in amateur telescopes can observe in 3 wavelengths. Cak, H-Alpha and white light.
In the CaK picture you can see some white areas called “plages” that are created when hot gas entering the photosphere in the chromosphere. You can also see crackly textured surface, various sunspots, granulation and “orange peel” over the entire surface. You can see a incredible flare, a prominence of about 1/4 of the diameter of the Sun, or what is the same, the size of 25 Earths.
In the H-Alpha picture, several prominences are visible. Active areas of the Sun are marked by dark plages.
In the white light picture, you can see the photosphere, spots with umbra and penumbra, also solar faculae are visibles.
